Last year, I had the incredible opportunity to visit D.C. with the NGMZ Community. As the VP of Diversity and Inclusion of PRSSA at my university, I was eager to learn more from peers and professionals about improving and fostering environments of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) within the Public Relations (PR) and business sectors. Here are some of the keynotes I learned from this trip as I attempt to define and break down DEIB within PR: DEIB is essential in today’s globalized and linked society.
Building a thriving and prosperous society is fundamentally based on these ideals. As we look at different businesses, such as Nestlé or AARP, it becomes clear that adopting DEIB is a moral requirement and a tactical benefit. Integrating DEIB concepts is essential in the field of PR, as communication is a key factor in influencing perceptions and forming public opinion. Diversity is all about creating an environment where differences are celebrated and embraced rather than simply ticking off a checkbox. In PR, diversity encompasses a wide range of factors, such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and
physical abilities.
Having diverse PR teams leads to enhanced creativity, a deeper understanding of audiences, and more robust decision-making processes. By incorporating diverse perspectives, PR professionals can develop campaigns that are not only more effective but also more inclusive, as they gain valuable insights into the needs and expectations of diverse communities. Equity is all about acknowledging and addressing deep-rooted biases and unfair
disadvantages that certain groups face due to systemic factors. In the world of PR, it’s crucial for
professionals to strive for fairness and equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their
backgrounds.
This means looking closely at internal policies and practices to identify and eliminate any barriers that might hinder underrepresented groups from reaching top positions in the industry. Moreover, it’s important to create an environment where professionals from diverse backgrounds can thrive and showcase their unique talents, fostering innovation and excellence. Inclusion is all about creating a culture where everyone feels like they truly belong—where their worth, respect, and voices are acknowledged. It’s important to note that inclusion
goes beyond mere diversity.
In PR, it’s crucial for professionals to actively cultivate inclusive spaces that foster collaboration, welcome diverse perspectives, and encourage open discussions. By prioritizing inclusion, PR teams can cultivate a sense of belonging, allowing individuals to bring their authentic selves to work, resulting in greater job satisfaction and productivity. Lastly, the main goal of DEIB in PR is to foster a sense of belonging. When people feel
like they truly belong, they become more engaged, motivated, and enthusiastic about giving their
best. Building connections and earning the trust of diverse audiences is the heart and soul of
public relations.
By embracing DEIB principles, PR experts can build stronger relationships with different communities and ensure their campaigns and messages are genuine and relatable. Furthermore, when PR teams create a sense of community, it promotes collaboration and empathy, leading to improved teamwork, creative problem-solving, and overall success.
In conclusion, embracing diversity, equity, inclusion, and creating a sense of belonging isn’t just about following the latest trends; it’s essential for a thriving and up-to-date PR business.
