The definition of unity is “the state of being united or joined as a whole.” That bond can never be broken when something or a group of people are in unity, even when there are forces that try to come against it that do not want to see it prosper. I have witnessed and been a part of DEI initiatives that encourage “unity in diversity.” Unfortunately, many companies do not want to see this kind of prosperity. We must be the change we want to see so that those around us can be educated, dispel the myths that have been made, and cultivate a thriving, diverse work environment.
When I think about diversity, I think about the melting pot of America. We all come from diverse backgrounds and social classes. Companies have begun to support diversity in the workplace because of the myriad of benefits that come from it. Diversity is the engine that brings opportunities to those who want to see change. According to Indeed, diversity offers “Better opportunities for creativity and problem-solving.” A diverse group of individuals will work toward bettering their working environment and the environment around them. Different experiences, perspectives, and insights can help solve problems. Creativity with this kind of unity calls upon the unique experiences we, collaborators, can propel into innovative ideas and strategies for constantly changing markets.
It also cannot be forgotten that we want a business to have a good reputation when it comes to DEI initiatives. This should be a top priority for all businesses. A survey has shown that “17% of people who are looking for jobs say that DEI initiatives that are displayed during the hiring process help them establish a positive connection during the interview phase.” Diversity in the workplace is meant to foster company culture. There has been some pushback from people in power who feel that diversity should not be spoken about or represented in a place of business. What they do not see is that these positive effects result in a better culture within the company and allow for other potential candidates who are also top performers.
Diversity is one of the greatest gifts that this world has to offer. Unity in diversity is so much more than just having people from diverse backgrounds working in an office building together. It is an opportunity to gain experience and create new strategies and ideas that can be marketed to a vast number of consumers. Someone important in my life taught me to always invest in the people around me. Everyone has a unique story, experience, or creative way to share with the next person they see. I am forever grateful to have the privilege and opportunity to be part of the communities I am in today. Being the change we want to see all starts with action and courage to do what must be done.
